International Youth Day focuses on the difficulties that some young people are experiencing throughout the world. It’s an initiative that honors the traits of young people and that acknowledges the challenges that today’s fledging youth face. To support the elimination of these issues it is important that they can reach the right resources for education, wellbeing, medicine, and more.
To celebrate #IYD2022 we highlight an organization close to home that partners with public school districts to engage vulnerable youth in full-time mental health and emotional well-being program embedded in an alternate education classroom. BC based Take a Hike Foundation engages youth with intentional, continuous clinical counselling, outdoor experiential learning, and community. Local public school district partners provide high quality education, and together, they empower youth with the skills and resilience they need to graduate high school, build healthy relationships, and achieve success – however they define it.
History:
Since the first program opened in 2000, Take a Hike has grown into seven school districts across BC, continuing to expand each year to meet the needs of more vulnerable youth.
Over the past twenty-two years, they have developed a proven, trauma-informed, evidence-based program model that has transformed the lives of hundreds of youths in B.C. along with their families.
Mission:
Their mission is to empower vulnerable youth with the skills and resilience they need to graduate high school, build healthy relationships, navigate the challenges of young adulthood, and achieve success - however they define it. They do this by engaging youth in intentional and continuous clinical counselling, regular outdoor adventures, and supporting youth in a safe and caring community.
