JDRF Wants a World Without Type 1 Diabetes

Nov 24, 2021

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Their goal is to raise funds to support the most advanced international type 1 diabetes research and progressively remove the impact of this disease from people’s lives.

Vision
A world without type 1 diabetes.

Mission
Improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults. In T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone the body needs to get energy from food.

This means a process your body does naturally and automatically becomes something that now requires your daily attention and manual intervention. It has nothing to do with your diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it, and there is no cure.

If you have T1D, you must constantly monitor your blood-sugar level, inject, or infuse insulin through a pump, and carefully balance these insulin doses with your eating and activity throughout the day and night. People suffering from T1D and their families have to remain alert at all times.

However, insulin is not a cure for diabetes. Even with the most vigilant disease management, a significant portion of your day will be spent with either high or low blood-sugar levels. These fluctuations can be life-threatening in both the short and long term.

JDRF wants to cure T1D and turn Type One into Type None.

Impact

  • No other organization does more to fight T1D than JDRF. It is the world’s largest nonprofit funder of T1D research.
  • JDRF funds research into clinical trials aimed at curing T1D, and lobbies for more funding and action from governments around the world.
  • Through advocacy and research leadership, JDRF influences and attracts others to support funding for cures and improving lives. For every dollar that JDRF puts towards research, it pulls in nearly $3.50 more. In fiscal year 2020, that totaled $506M.

JDRF's mission is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its complications through the support of research. Your generosity makes real progress possible and propels JDRF toward their goal of a world without T1D.
