Nonprofit Spotlight: Food Banks Canada

Jul 20, 2021

Food banks are pillars within communities and provide other forms of support than just food to people facing an urgent need (many have programs and services such as skills training, community kitchens and job searching). They rely on donations to meet their communities’ needs.

About FOOD BANKS CANADA

Vision
"A Canada where no one goes hungry."

Mission
"We provide national leadership to relieve hunger today and prevent hunger tomorrow in collaboration with the food bank network in Canada."

Food Banks Canada is a national charitable organization representing the food bank community across Canada. As the umbrella organization over a network of more than 500 food banks and 3000 agencies, it serves approximately 85% of people accessing emergency food programs nationwide. Its mission is to meet the short term need for food and find long-term solutions to reduce hunger.

During the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of Canadians, small and large businesses, private and family foundations, and the government provided essential support to ensure food banks could continue their work and overcome challenges such as reduced volunteers and the extra cost of safety procedures and PPE.

Donations supported adjustments to operations to keep staff, volunteers and clients safe while dealing with ongoing supply chain interruptions. Playing a crucial role in Canada’s COVID-19 response, they helped Food Banks Canada:

  • Support 13 provinces and territories and 4751 communities across Canada
  • Provide 34, 274, 242 lbs of food
  • Provide $97,988,180 in financial support

In addition, Food Banks Canada partnered with SkipTheDishes in Nov 2020 in a campaign to deliver $1 for every order placed on the Skip network on December 19, 2020 to Food Banks Canada. It will also deliver 150,000 food packs to children in need this summer.

Providing food to those in need can be difficult at the best of times. With COVID-19, that task got a lot harder. Please donate now to help put a smile on someone’s face and food on their table.
