In July we acknowledge some truly special awareness days. One of which is also celebrated by one of our amazing clients, the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation.
Disability Pride Month is celebrated each year in July. Disability Pride initially started as a day of celebration in 1990—the year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law followed by the first Disability Pride Day which was held in Boston that same year. The first official celebration of Disability Pride Month took place in July 2015 and since then, cities across the world have celebrated disability pride month with parades and other festivities.
Down Syndrome Resource Foundation
The vision of the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation is a world that values and empowers people with Down syndrome, fostering economic, social, and individual inclusion throughout their lives. Every day, DSRF works to make this vision a reality by supporting people living with Down syndrome and their families with individualized and leading-edge educational programs, health services, information resources, and rich social connections so each person can flourish in their own right.
The Down Syndrome Resource Foundation offers a level of Down syndrome expertise unmatched in Canada. Their caring therapists and teachers are Down syndrome specialists who work almost exclusively with individuals with Down syndrome. They have a deep knowledge of this population’s unique learning strengths and needs, and they truly appreciate and understand the individuals and families with whom they work. As one parent put it, “DSRF is a boutique of supporting our son for success.”
At DSRF, there is no such thing as a small accomplishment. Every new skill developed by our students is a step towards independence, and worth celebrating. As they recognize Disability Pride Month, they honour each unique individual for the person they are and the joy they bring to our lives.
At DSRF they offer a wide variety of programs, services, and resources for individuals with Down syndrome of all ages and their families. DSRF is a “one-stop-shop" for Down syndrome.
They provide;
• Group programs for youth and adults with Down syndrome
• One to one services for individuals and families at all stages of life
